A Home for Conservation
The Buddhist Art and Cultural Conservation Centre is currently under construction in Thimphu, Bhutan. The building will provide space for conservation, research, and cultural and educational programming. The Central Monastic Body has allocation land for the Centre and initial funding was provided by the Druk Foundation for Art Foundation. Construction of the Centre will be funded by the Dratshang Lhentshog (Council for Religious Affairs) and the Government of Bhutan.
The Centre will:
Enable the preservation and conservation of Buddhist paintings and objects
Empower the monks to take an active role in the preservation of the religious and cultural heritage of Bhutan and the Himalayas
Provide a place where museums, collectors and the community can come for conservation and preservation of Buddhist artwork
Train and educate the next generation of monk conservators on preservation techniques
Provide outreach and education to ensure the preservation of Bhutan’s unique living artistic traditions
Adhere to Bhutanese cultural values, embracing quality, efficiency and hard work to develop a self-sufficient and sustainable conservation centre
The conservation building will include 8,000 square feet of floor space with:
State-of-the-art conservation studios and training classrooms
Altar room and showcase for finished works
Office space for administration, staff and monk conservators
Secure storage spaces
